SESSIONS & SPEAKERSNEW FRUIT VARIETIES AT THE U of SFind out about the exciting new varieties of Apples, Haskap and Cherries that have been developed at the University of Saskatchewan; Discuss their attributes and how to best grow them with a focus on home gardeners. There will be a question and answer period after this talk.Speaker: Dr. Bob Bors, Assistant Professor U of S.Bob’s specialty is breeding fruit crops and adapting them for northern climates for mechanical harvesting. Although he is best known for developing new varieties of winter hardy sour cherries, he is also working on haskap, apples, interspecific strawberries, Saskatoons, and other fruits as well as some breeding of ornamental and vegetable crops mainly for teaching purposes: coleus, begonias, edible-podded radishes, edible-podded peas, and container tomatoes. Techniques used include tissue culture, propagation, disease screening, interspecific hybridization, polyploid manipulation and evaluation for health value. As you can see, Dr. Bors is a very busy guy, so we are please to have him come out and speak to us today!HEARTY HASKAP WINEEd will talk about his experience making Haskap wine and will also supply some free samples! Q&A Session follows talk.Speaker: Ed Brockmeyer, Humboldt U-pick operator.Ed operates a u-pick orchard, 4-1/4 miles north on Dixon Road near Humboldt. He is a retired grain farmer but leads a very active life in his “retirement”. In addition to u-pick Saskatoon and Haskap,he is President and founding member of Humboldt Vintage Club, founding member of the Dixon Ski Club and Paint Ball Club. He also enjoys flying his ultra light plane.APPLE CIDER FROM PRAIRE APPLESPeter will discuss his experiences with hard cider produced from apple cultivars available to prairie growers, including tips for home brewers to get the best out of their backyard apples. He'll also talk about the investigations under way at the U of S which may bring true cider apples to the prairies! Q&A Session follows talk.Peter Reimer, Technician, U of S Fruit ProgramPeter has been working for the U of S fruit program since 2009. Although he graduated from the College of Engineering, his interests have always veered him towards summer jobs at wineries in the Okanagan and other horticulture related ventures. Marie Saretsky - One of "Two Women from Burr"Marie Saretsky, of Burr, Saskatchewan, is one half of the dynamic catering duo known as “Two Ladies from Burr.” Marie is also a food educator, presenter, gardener, and artisan, as well as a juried member of the Saskatchewan Craft Council since 1995. Bernadette has done poetry readings at over 40 different towns in Saskatchewan and Manitoba, as well as at the Canadian Western Agribition show and many radio stations. Bernadette lives in Bruno.
